Monument details

HER Number:TR 36 NW 205
Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman enclosure cropmarks and undated barrows, Acol

Summary

The cropmarks of a rectangular enclosure have been identified in fields on the edge of the parish boundary between Acol and Margate and Ramsgate. Sighted in aerial photographs, the enclosure shows evidence of a causeway entrance and an internal feature. The site was subject to an archaeological investigation during work to lay a water pipeline. During this time three ditches were found: these features corresponded to the cropmarks. Amongst the fill of these ditches was animal bone, oyster and snail shells, Romano-British pottery, medieval pottery and half a human femur. Two circular cropmark features have also been identified in close proximity to this enclosure: it is suspected that these may be the remains of barrows.
