Monument details

HER Number:TR 36 NW 79
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible site of a medieval village, near Woodchurch, Ramsgate

Summary

Site of medieval village identified from cropmarks. It has been suggested that there is often very little evidence to prove that there ever was a village at the sites in question, though there may in some cases have been a manor house and perhaps one or two farmhouses and/or cottages. A deserted church site or an isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted village, though of course it is quite possible that further research or excavation may bring genuine deserted villages to light.

TR 325679 Cropmarks of medieval village. Site no. 116. (1) Everitt points out that as far as deserted medieval villages are concerned in most cases there is nothing to prove that there ever was a village at the sites in question, though there may in some cases have been a manor house and perhaps one or two farmhouses and/or cottages. A deserted church site or an isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted village, though of course it is quite possible that further research or excavation may bring genuine deserted villages to light. (2) Cropmark of enclosure. Linear cropmarks in the fields just south and west of Woodchurch Farm are probably representative of
the medieval village of Woodchurch. A 'plague pit' was reportedly encountered during trenching to the south of the farm. (3)
