A small scale pit was excavated in the back garden of Orchard House in Water Lane Ospringe as part of a research project being carried out in the Ospringe area by the Faversham Society Archaeological Research Group into prehistoric and early medieval human activity. At a depth of around forty centimetres, a very firm, level beaten earth floor emerged, with an edge running parallel to the back of the house. This edge curved sharply down to make a slot for a sole beam. The layer above the floor contained sherds of medieval pottery, whilst below the floor the pottery was Romano British. (1)
