Two small scale excavations were dug opposite each other on either side of Water Lane, Ospringe. The excavation was part of a research project being carried out in the Ospringe area by the Faversham Society Archaeological Research Group into prehistoric and early medieval human activity. The western one, K54, revealed a pebbled path of post medieval date beneath which was a layer containing pottery of medieval date, mostly local Tyler Hill ware. On the east side, K55, there was no feature to seal the medieval deposits but medieval abraded sherds increased markedly in frequency with depth. In both pits, the pottery was associated with small fragments of animal bone and shell. In K55, at a depth of 0.8.metres, the sherds were all from the Roman occupation period. The medieval finds were seen as suggesting agricultural usage for this area in medieval times. (1)
