[Area TQ 4779 5491] An ancient stone cross in the grounds of Brasted Place, which originally stood close by its present spot, by the old course of the Brasted - Ide Hill road, now 200 yards to the east. The cross stands upon a little bridge built over the hollow way which formed the old road, and beneath it is an inscription recording the fact that it formerly stood by the wayside. According to local tradition, the pilgrims used to turn aside from the Pilgrims Way, at Brasted, to visit this wayside shrine. [The road was diverted about 140 years ago when the present Brasted Place was built.] (1) The cross fell from the bridge (at TQ 47815494) a few years ago. The fragments, preserved at Brasted Place, (TQ 45 SE 12) are of a simple, uninscribed and undecorated sandstone cross showing considerable weathering.
