Summary

Roman vases, paterae and flagons were found in 1872-3 when digging for the Granville stables, East Cliff. The vases contained human skeletal remains. A rhinoceros horn approximately 1m in length was also found. It was identified as that of a white rhinoceros; it has been interpreted as possible evidence that the Romans introduced live animals into the country possibly for the arena.

[TR 38876539] Roman Pottery found A.D. 1872-3. (NAT) (1) Roman vases, etc., found in 1872-3 at junction of Queens Road and Thanet Road. (2) Vases and paterae (some of Samian were found in 1872-3 when digging for the Granville stables, East Cliff. (3) A black vase with skeletons and a brown vase with skeleton (all Roman) were found in the road beyond the Granville Farm, Ramsgate. [TR 38936542]. (4) A carinated vase of Upchurch ware and two 1st c. flagons from the East Cliff, Ramsgate are on exhibition in Ramsgate Public Library. The area is completely developed and there is no record of more recent finds. (5) TR 389654 (centred) Romano British remains. Site no. 169. (6) TR 386654 and TR 388653. Two graves were excavated each of which contained human skeletal material as well as a vase of Upchurch ware. There was also discovered a rhinoceros horn of approximately 3 feet in length. This is thought to have belonged to a white rhinoceros, which leads to speculation that the Romans introduced live animals into the country possibly for the arena. (7) TR 388652. c.1870.
