Summary

A Romano-British burial ground has been indicated by the discovery of numerous Roman artefacts and burials since a number were first revealed in 1890/1891. Subsequent discoveries were made in 1905, 1918, 1925 and in 1963. The finds included human skeletal remains, burial urns, samian ware, and a pottery assemblage comprised of 1st and 2nd century wares.

['A' TR 39696873] ROMANO BRITISH BURIAL GROUND [R] ['B' TR 39716885] Roman Remains found A.D. 1925 (NAT) ['C' TR 39846886] Roman Burials found A.D. 1891 (NAT) ['D' TR 39726864] Urns and Samian found A.D. 1905 (NAT) ['E' TR 39696858] Roman Urns found A.D. 1891 (NAT) (1) In 1905, two graves, each containing a skeleton and pottery dated between A.D. 100 and A.D. 150, were found in the garden opposite "St. David's", Stone Road, Broadstairs. [Site 'D'] Earlier, in 1890, twenty burials with similar pottery were found in Castle Avenue, 80 yds west of Stone Raod and approx 280 yrds. south of Stone House, [Site 'A'] and in 1891, Roman urns, fibulae and Samian paterie were found with human skeltons half a mile north-east of the town, [prob. sites 'C' and 'E'] while in 1918, pottery fragments (presumabley 1st and 2nd c.) were found by soldiers at Stone Gap. [Not shown by OS]. [The authority for 'C' and 'E' in 1905 was Hurd, the Borough Surveyor for many years, while Crawford Authorised 'B' later, citing Hurd and remarking, "Roman earthworks and pottery"]. (2-7) [F. TQ 39586874] Further graves with 1st c. pottery found in 1963 immediately North of "Broad Water", where two bungalows are being constructed. (8) The graves noted by Coy were found at TR 39606873 - 'F', in front of and between the two bungalows to the immediate N of a bungalow called 'Broadwater', Queen's Avenue. The find spot was pointed out by the site foreman; the pottery is in the possession of Broadstairs Historical Society. A 2nd c. grey carinated beaker and a 2nd c. buff flagon (property of Broadstairs Historical Society) both from the Stone Road sites are on exhibition in Broadstairs Public Library.
