Summary

A Romano British cremation cemetery found south of Walmer Lodge in 1901 and 1962 during landscaping and development. The burials which were dated from the 1st to 2nd century were accompanied by amphorae, paterae, bowls and a coin. The finds were deposited in Deal Castle Museum.

[TR 37735076] ROMAN BURIAL GROUND [R] (1) In 1901 an RB cremation cemetery was discovered whilst laying out gardens 50 yards S of Walmer Lodge (now Walmer Place). In Deal Castle Museum, from this site, is an early-mid C2 AD amphora-shaped jar of light green glass (form 65) which contained a cremation and was found inside an amphora with the neck removed (see illustration card no 2). In Deal Town Hall is a further selection of pottery including amphorae, paterae, bowls and a coin of Antoninus Pius. Also a Samian patera found in 1911 at the same place. In 1962 about 14 more C1-C2 cremation groups, discovered during the laying out of a service road for new flats on the site of Walmer Place, at TR 3770 5078, were excavated by A.G. Southam on behaldf of MOW&PB. The finds are to be deposited in Deal Castle Museum. (2) Additional bibliography not consulted. (3-9)
