In draining a field on the farm of Mr J. B. Gibben "at Walton about 500 yards from Woodnesborough Church" [c. 1902], calcined bone was found in a layer of earth one spit below the surface extending over an area of about 100 square feet. About 100 yards away, in the same field, more burnt bones were found at a depth of 4ft. " ... thought to be Roman funeral piles, but no objects of Roman date are recorded" (b). No further information was obtained during fieldwork but the present owner (c) of Walton Farm is of the opinion that the site may be the same as that where Roman coins have been found [cf TR 35 NW 26]. Here, until recently, a shallow hollow existed, and the land was formerly owned by Gibben. (1)
