[TR 33655524] Romano-British cremation burials found AD 1936 [NAT] (1) In 1936, a telephone trench on the east side of the Sandwich-Deal road cut through a number of grave groups (said to be cremations but the bone examined suffered little from fire) on the north side of the fork to Worth, a few hundred yards south of the temple site (see TR 35 NW 27). Workmen failed to distinguish the groups, but some of the pottery suggests "Swarling" cremations not later than the mid 1st century AD while late Roman pieces suggest inhumations. On the south side of the fork, 2nd century pottery was found as well as a post-Roman bowl (after mid 5th century but not Jutish) and a dish described as "sub-Roman" and probably the same age. (2) Local farmers confirmed this general siting. Nothing was found at the time of visit and the present whereabouts of the 1936 finds is not known. (3)
