The lost village of Spruckelham is thought to have been sited in the vicinity of the Chequers Inn at TR 369 557. There is one manuscript amongst the Court Rolls of the Priory Manor of Eastry which mentions the place name Spruckelham. The function of Spruckelham during the Middle Ages has yet to be ascertained but its position at the termination of hundred, parish and manorial boundaries denotes a place of some local importance. (1)
An earthwork enclosure measuring 193m is visible to the north west in military aerial photographs taken in August 1941 as part of the SE Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey. The earthworks are partially visible in June 1980 and by 2001 the area around the earthworks has been re-developed into a reservoir (2). It is possible that these earthworks are related to the deserted medieval village of Spruckelham.
