Summary

Romano-British burials. Early C2nd (?) brown ware burial urn of adult male and young female (c.15 yrs old) with Samian ware pottery. Also found on this site were 2 one-handled flagons of yellow and red ware, the base of a black jar, a Samian cup, a barbitoned bowl, a platter and pottery sherds.

[TQ 5414 6409] Romano-British burials found AD 1931 [NAT] (1) A burial urn containing the bones of an adult male was found in August 1931 3 feet down in the chalk with Samian and other pottery, dated to the early C2nd - during excavation for a pylon near Lower Austin Lodge, Eynsford (Lat 51 degrees 21 minutes 15 seconds, Long. 0 degrees 12 minutes 50 seconds). The bones of a female aged about 15 years were found nearby at the same depth. (2-4) In store in Dartford Museum, from this site, are a large brown ware urn with cremation, a small one-handled flagon of yellow ware, the base of a black jar of gritty ware with trellis ornament, the neck and handle of a rough red one handled flagon, a Samian cup form 33, a platter form 18/31, a barbitoned bowl (form 35) and miscellaneous sherds.
