Trial trenching by Smarden Local History Society found evidence of a Roman settlement enclosed by a ditch. A complete vessel in the base of the ditch dates it to the [Late?] Iron Age. A cremation was found, in addition to domestic debris, and a 2nd century military belt plate. A probable Iron Age roundhouse drip gully was found below the Roman site. The site was excavated due to a surface spread of iron slag. No smelting activity was recorded in the excavations, though a smelting area in the vicinity of the settlement seems likely. (1)
