Excavation by Smarden Local History Society found 3 Roman timber buildings, dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. The site was initially investigated due to a surface scatter of iron slag over a wide tract of land. The excavation revealed a large amount of slag though only one possible Roman ore-roasting hearth. This was 1.5m in diamter with traces of ironstone and charcoal within it. The largest building measured 9m x 4m. A number of iron objects were found within it. [No mention of the other buildings in article.] (1)
