Excavation by Smarden Local History Society at Cousins Farm in 2008 found 2 smelting hearths located at either end of a small gully which was filled with iron-working waste. Bloomery 1 had an 0.60m x 0.40m oval base filled with 18cm of slag and charcoal. Bloomery 2 was smaller, only 0.40m in diameter. It had little slag inside. Radiocarbon dating from bloomery 2 gave a range of 180-40BC at 95% probability. (1)
