(TR 1495557750) St Andrew's Church (Rectory) [NAT]. (1) St Andrews's Church, Canterbury. 11th century foundation in the middle of The Parade. Pulled down in 1763, rebuilt 1775 south of the Parade, which was closed in 1882 and demolished 1956. No churchyard. (2) The 18th century tower of St Andrew's Church was demolished in reconstructing Westminster Bank. A case in the hall contains materials from the site and that of the older church, and an account of the history by Dr William Urry. (3) William I gave the church of St Andrew to the abbey in exchange for dwellings belonging to the abbey, cleared to build the castle. (4) In High Street, just after passing the end of Mercery Lane, the original pavement of the old St Andrew's Church was found 2 feet underthe present surface. The paving consisted of tombstones covering the graves of former inhabitants of the parish, with inscriptions quite perfect. Some half-decayed coffins and bones were also thrown up by the workmen and some well known to have been personages of some note in the city. One was as late a date as 1764 and another 1753. (5, 6)
