Summary
Saxon cemetery excavated at the west end of St Augustine's Abbey Church and to the south of the church between 1960-78. Much human loose bone was found, the product of disturbed burials from unmarked graves, together with a number of articulated skeletons. All sexes and ages were represented among the bodies found suggesting that this was a lay cemetery. Associated grave goods included a 6th or 7th century buckle and an 8th century scramasax.
The site lies outside and to south-east the city wall, alongside the Richborough road. OD 15-20m.

A Saxon cemetery was revealed during excavations at the W end of St Augustine's Norman Abbey Church, 1955, by A Saunders. (TR 15405773 - see illustration card for plan). There had been much reburying and many burials were jumbled, but parts of 14 articulated skeletons were found and 19 skulls. (1-2) Further excavations, 1976-1978, by H Woods.
