(TR 13474234) Tumulus [NR] (1) A previously unrecorded Roman barrow was located by M.D. Collier in in 1936-8 situated in a small copse adjoining the west side of Stone Street, 550 yards north of Round Down Wood, Stowting. It is 9 ft maximum height, 81 ft diameter and 270 ft circumference and is little spread with no ditch. It has the flattened top characteristic of Roman burial mounds and its position hard by the side of a Roman road is a further reliable clue to its date. There is no sign of any excavation and the barrow, which at present has young trees and bushes growing on it, is in an excellent state of preservation. (2) Scheduled as Roman barrow. (3) A steep-sided barrow as described by Jessup although during the recent clearing of the copse its base was cut into and it now averages 20.0m in diameter. There is no trace of a ditch. Published 25" survey revised. (4)
