(TQ 58546945) Possible Roman Camp, Gills Wood, visible on A.P. No. 4062, CPE/UK/2065/May 14th, 1947. Double banks and ditches, straight sides, one corner clearly rounded. Traces of a curved ditch beneath, possibly pre-Roman. Parish boundary follows S.E. side and delineates earthwork where the air photo fails to show them. Earthwork visible on ground (Gills wood recently grubbed up), but no Roman material found as yet, though many flint flakes. This angular earthwork lies on a chalk corridor (between Thanet Sand to N. and Clay with Flints to S.) stretching from Rochester to River Darenth about Horton Kirby (a). Possible Roman marching camp overlying Iron Age occupation site (b). (1) Gills Wood no longer exists: the area has been incorporated into the surrounding fields and is under cultivation. There are now no traces of earthworks. (2) No change. (3) Additional bibliography - not consulted. (4) This site has been re-classified as part of RCHME Roman Camps in England Project and the supposed Roman camp rejected. (5)
