Summary

During a watching brief undertaken by Archaeology South-East near Fitzwilliams Gate at Dover Castle in 2002 dumped medieval stonework was found in this area. It probably derived from the lower Fitzwilliam Gateway tunnel when it collapsed in c.1928. The roadway to the tunnel may have been strengthened to allow machine access at this time and the rubble was used for this purpose. During a watching brief in 2002 dumped medieval stonework was found in this area. It probably derived from the lower Fitzwilliam Gateway tunnel when it collapsed in c.1928. The roadway to the tunnel may have been strengthened to allow machine access at this time and the rubble was used for this purpose. (1)
