A public park containing three gardens of differing character, The Gordon Garden, the Dell and The New Tavern Fort. The later is a garden which surrounds a fort that historically guarded th entrance to the Thames. The park is undergoing a major scheme of restoration and development by Gravesend Borough Council. (1)
The Gordon Memorial Garden is a public park which the garden was donated by G M Arnold, the Mayor from 1890-93. It commemorates General Gordon, who lived in Gravesend between 1865 and 1871.
The New Tavern Fort is a municipal garden in Gravesend. Features include a rose garden and a bandstand.The cannon and fortifications are somewhat softened, for those who come in peace, by judicious planting around the defences. The Rose Garden marks the site of the Fort House which was destroyed by a V2 rocket in 1944. The Victorian bandstand is a decorative construction with oriental pretensions.
