A Second World War pillbox (Type 22 or 24) survives to the west of Sarre Ferry Cottage. It may have been associated with the roadblock/prepared demolition at Bolingbroke Bridge, to the north-east, but we cannot yet be sure. Alternatively (since it may face west or south-west) it may have been part of the defences of the Sarre Second World War Nodal Point. This is reported to be a ‘small hexagonal Type 22 pillbox, a variant inasmuch as there are two rifle ports, one each side of the entrance … concrete-faced [with] square, stepped embrasures’. And to stand ‘on small mound with thin concrete base partly exposed … overgrown on one side’.
