According to the Council for British Archaeology Defence of Britain Project, there was a Second World War Home Guard Auxiliary unit operational base on a playing field at the University of Kent. This data was probably gathered from a rather imprecise location map, which has been reproduced in Lampey's book (see sources). German intelligence were aware of a number of fortifications in the vicinity, but it is unlikely that this secret, underground hide would have been known to them. Col Norman Field (see sources) had not seen this hideout, but suggested that this secret unit of sabateurs might have been headed by man who lived in Thanington. There is a long bank down the side of the most likely field, which may, cioncievably have housed the hide.
