HER Number:TR 13 NE 27
Type of record:Findspot
Name:C9th strap-end

Summary

A 9th century strap-end was found in Postling in 1960 by Mr C Amos while digging trenches for the post-office building. It was presented to the Royal Museum, Canterbury. It is a bronze, slender strip, 5.3 cm long, with the broader end being split to receive a thin strap to be fastened inside it by a pair of rivets through the two holes now broken away. The narrower end thickens to take the form of an animal head. The central panel also has an animal portrait, which is sketchy and crude, and consists of incisions mostly in straight lines. The exact Postling form is not common.

(1) Mr Vickery, Engineer at the Post Office Radio Transmitting Station, Tolsford Hill, stated that a cable duct was laid in 1960 from the mainroad at Staple Farm, TR 15463935, to a new building at the station, at TR 16003883. Mr Amos was not known to him, but was probably a GPOlabourer, who might now be working anywhere in the south east. (2)
