(Area TR 152364). On the south side of the railway cutting at Hayne Hill, Saltwood, where the LBA hoard was found, (see TR 13 NE 8) there are five parallel banks of earth (of unknown date), partly overgrown with bracken and scrub-oak. Earlier publications suggest that the banks form a prehistoric earthwork, and the fact that the bronzes were found on the site is stressed. Mr O'Neill Osborne visited the site with Dr Chidell, and there is nothing to give the impression that the earthworks are prehistoric. However, the density and age of the trees on the banks show that they are more than dumps of soil excavated from the railway cutting. The find (TR 13 NE 8) was made on a ridge which appears to be the natural crest of the hill, and not one of the artificial banks. (1) The disposition of these ridges of sandy soil on Heane Hill, radiating from above the railway tunnel leaves little doubt but that they are spoil heaps. (2)
