[TR 15233648] A LBA bronze founder's hoard, partly in the possession of Mr Lemmon of Saltwood and partly in Folkestone Museum, [1939] was found on 04.06.1872, 25 yards north-east-by-north of the highest point of Hayne Hill, Saltwood, during construction of a cutting and tunnel for the Hythe-Sandgate railway. It is a good example of a LBA metal-workers collection of pieces for re-casting. The object included the remains of socketed axes, spear- heads, blades, sword fragments, a small chisel, chape, suggested claspor ornament for a sword-belt and a possible linch pin for a vechicle. In addition, a number of rough copper ingots were found. (1-11) On exhibition in Hythe Museum (on loan from Mr JH Lemmon, The Croft, Saltwood (May 1939)) 58 pieces from the hoard: and in Folkestone Museum, a further 12 pieces. A more exact siting cannot now be determined as the highest point of the hill is hidden beneath spoil heaps from the construction of the railway. (12) Additional bibliography not consulted. (13-14)
