[Marginal] Romano-British industries, a kiln, used perhaps for burning shells instead of chalk was discovered some years prior to 1874 near Shellness Point, in the extreme east of Sheppey. (1) In the extreme east point of the Island of Sheppey, near Shellness Point, in one of those curious unaccountable mounds found in the marshes, was discovered, some years since, what I have little doubt from the description given to me of the masonry was a Roman kiln for burning the shells at Shellness for their best lime. (2) No identified. Probably a salt working mound qv. TQ 97 SW 6.(3). Additional reference (4,5) The area consists of flat yet reasonably firm mud and sands, no visible trace of this kiln it may be buried in the forshore mud. investigation of the area by the English Heritage MPP failed to locate the monument. Should it be located in the future, it should be re-assessed for scheduling at that time. (4-6)
