A grid-like pattern of small earthworks exists in 'The Stumbles', a field west of East Lenham. Investigation by the Lenham Archaeological Society has so far not identified their function, although they have been augmented by field drains. Other investigation of the field by geophysical survey and excavation have located a probable iron age surface in the north-west corner of the field and a prehistoric surface in the centre of the field.
The iron age surface 'in the north-west corner of the field' was found by a 60 m x 20 m excavation that had produced a high resistivity reading. 50 cm below the ground was a 10 cm deep flint layer associated with iron age pottery.
An area in the centre of the field was also excavated. Only one narrow ditch was discovered but several flint tempered sherds thought to be late Bronze Age or Iron Age date were found.
The exact location of the two excavated areas is not known. (1-2)
