Summary

An Anglo-Saxon burial was found between 1902 and 1904 at Tarbutt's chalk quarry near Boughton Aluph. The skeleton was found with a sword, an iron spearhead and ten Roman coins. The chalk quarry has long ceased to be function and no more is known about the discovery of these artefacts. It is thought that at present the finds are located in the Maidstone or Rochester Museums.

The site extends down the lower, south-east facing slopes of a chalk spur, overlooking the Stour Valley. OD 80-100m.

(Area : TR 037488). An Anglo-Saxon burial was found between 1902 and 1904 at Boughton Aluph at Tarbutt's chalk quarry opposite Whitehall where the Wye-Challock road crosses the Pilgrim Road. The Skeleton was accompanied by a sword, iron spearhead, ten Roman coins, etc. Information from Mr H.F Abell of Kennington Hall. (1) The chalk quarry centred at TR 03724878 has long ceased to be worked and is covered with bushes and undergrowth. Nothing is known about the finds, at Maidstone or Rochester Museums.
