There is a church site [TR 03 NE 12 - Chapel and Manor House], accompanied by village-like earthworks at [TR 091351] with local traditions. (1) There was a Domesday church at Court-at-Street and traditionally the Danes destroyed "an important town here" in AD 893. (2) No clear sign of a settlement. (3) The "village-like" earthworks at the foot of the steep sandstone cliffs at Court-at-Street are the result of slumping and solifluxion. The only visible remains are the ruins of the Bellirica Chapel (TR 03 NE 12) and traces of a small agricultural enclosure some 90.0m to the west of it, of uncertain but probably late date. For a similar site nearby see TR 03 NE 14. (4) TR 090353. Billerica. Listed as a Deserted Medieval Village in Kent. (5) Maurice Beresford and John G. Hurst eds Deserted Medieval Villages, 1971, list 69 places for Kent in their County Gazetteers of Deserted Medieval Villages. In most cases there is nothing to prove that there was a village at the sites in question. A deserted church site or isolated church certainly does not prove the existence of a deserted village.
