[TQ 9382 7276] A hoard of 415 silver coins of the reigns of Edward VI and Charles I, probably deposited in 1648, was discovered on 28th August 1968 (1). The exact findpot was pointed out on the ground at TQ 9381 7276 by the Clerk of Works (Gilbert Ash). The coins were found in an inverted pot with a slate over the mouth, at a depth of 2-3ft., when a road to a new school was being constructed. The coins and pot were believed to have been sold privately. Site surveyed at 1:2500 (2). The coin hoard was found at TQ 9382 7276, now the main entrance to Sheppey School. It was 18 inches below ground, in an inverted crock set on half a roof tile. The crock, which was shattered by the excavating machine, was of plain red fabric, 5.25 inches high and 5 inches in diameter, with a seating for a missing lid. 417 coins were found, all from the Tower of London mint, except two Charles I half-crowns minted in York. (See Illustration Card for photos, and composition of the hoard.) The hoard was declared Treasure Trove and offered for sale in its entirety to local museums. None could afford it and so it was finally split up and sold at auction by Glendinings for £577 in total (3). Additional reference with a detailed list of the coins (4). Additional reference (5).
