A large tumulus was opened in Cromer's Wood on July 29th 1881, by order of the owner of the estate, the late Edward Twopeny Esq. The mound was circular in form and surrounded by a well-defined fosse, 71 paces round it, it measured 19 paces over the apex from one ditch to the other, and occupied a prominent position to the S.E. of Woodstock House, and not far in the wood which slopes down to the Sittingbourne and Wormshill or Frinstead Road. The tumulus was composed almost wholly of flint stones gathered from the hillside. Only a few pieces of pottery of uncertain date were found, below a very noticeable depression on the summit, also a flint ball, probably a hammer stone. The mound had probably previously been rifled. ["Cromer Wood" is published on O.S. 6" 1938-48 at TQ 907604.] (1) Inspection of the Tithe Maps of Tunstall and Sittingbourne gave no information. (2) During a perambulation of Cromer Wood, the woodcutter was encountered. He stated that he knew the wood well but had never seen or heard of tumulus, as described above. The wood is very thick making search difficult and although several dense scatters of flint were seen, none seemed to indicate the site of a barrow. (3)
