"More recently [since c.1893], pottery and clay loom-weights were found just north of the Black Huts at Barrow Green, when brickearth was being dug there." [Roman finds in Teynham parish] (1) The site of the Black Huts was indicated by Mr. Stevens of Osier Farm, as being on the site of some new council houses just to the west of his farm at TQ 96126313 (Black Huts were brickearth diggers' cottages). A large area of the country has been dug for brickearth to the north, and the finds cannot be sited with any degree of accuracy. Mr. Stevens knows nothing of these finds and Mr. L.R.A. Grove, Curator, Maidstone Museum, could offer no information about them (2). Additional reference (3).
