Fragments of Samian ware, figured and plain, found in the rifle marsh [unlocated] near Elmley Ferry, Sittingbourne. [Collection dispersed, most going to B.M. and Rochester Museum. Finds most likely held by one of these.] (1) The Payne Collection has been dispersed to the British, Rochester and Maidstone Museums. Exact whereabouts of the above pottery not ascertained. (2) Fragments of handsomely figured Samian Ware and of other Roman pottery, were found very lately (c.1874) in connection with Bos Longifrons skulls, at a spot near the Rifle Range in the marshes of Murston. Elmley Ferry and a nearby rifle range both now disused are shown on the OS 1:10000 map of 1979 (at TQ 93456659 and TQ 93596604 (TQ 96 NW 1073)). A building called Little Murston is shown at TQ 93256560 (3). Additional reference (4) and site photographs (5,6).
