Description from record TQ 96 SE 30:
[TQ 9737 6080] Provender [NR] (1) Norton - Provenders is a fine gabled timber-framed house, part of it very early and part dating from the 17th century. (2) "Provender" (name confirmed by owner) is a large, rambling two-storey,half-timbered, private residence of irregular plan with the principal front facing N.W. At the rear of the house is a mass of small, gabled additions, mostly modern, and at the east end is a 17th century addition in early brick. All roofs are modern, much timberwork has been restored, but many fine carved beams remain. All windows are modern replacements, but the iron studded oak front door remains, with a Tudor lintel. The chimneys have been restored, but there is a fine decorative external brick stack on the north side. The fabric is in excellent condition. The house belongs to Princess Andrea of Russia, who claimed that the first building was in 1246; its present appearance suggests nothing earlier than the 16th century. GP's/AO.59/198/4 from N.W. of 17th century additions: 198/5 from N.W.: 198/6 from S.W. (3) Checked and correct. (4) Provender, Grade I. Double L-shaped timber-framed and close-studded building with plaster infilling. (For full description see list.) (5) Provender. House. C16 and subsequently restored and enlarged. Timber framed and exposed close-studding with plaster infill, part underbuilt with painted brick. Plain tiled roof. Irregular plan, main range with large projecting wing.
