Summary

Grade II listed building. Main construction periods 1625 to 1965. Norton Court was built to the design of Inigo Jones around 1625, remodelled in the early 19th century and then remodelled again in 1910. It is a two storey atructure with an attic floor in parts, built of painted brick in Flemish bond, with a tiled roof.

Description from record TQ 96 SE 28:
[TQ 9674 6120] Norton Court [NAT] (1) Norton Court was designed by Inigo Jones in 1625; it is surrounded by 70 acres of park-like ground. (2) The house faces east with a long, balanced facade in white brick, surmounted by a broad pediment, and with very short end-wings containing large doorways. the red-tiled, hipped and gabled roof is partly hidden by a parapet. The chimneys are built in red brick in English Bond as are the ends of the house. A wing at the rear containing domestic offices is probably contemporary. The house is temporarily unoccupied and the front is overgrown with creeper, but is otherwise in excellent condition. APs./AO/59/198/1 from S.E.: 198/2 from South. (3) Checked and correct: now occupied. (4) Norton Court, Grade II*. The original house is said to have been built by Inigo Jones for the Milles family in 1625. House and courtyards. C17, remodelled early C19 and 1910 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. Painted brick in Flemish bond with plain tiled roof. Two storeys on plinth, with platband and cornice, and attic with 3 pedimented dormers and stacks to rear right and to left. Irregular fenestration of 6 glazing bar sashes with shutters on first floor, and 4 segment headed glazing bar sashes on ground floor. Two 8 panelled doors to left and to right. Main entrance in right return front, double doors of 6 panels with tracered elliptical fanlight, and attached Doric columns. Rear ranges tile hung and half-hipped. Interior: contains a painted "monks room" decorated by fugitive Catholic recusant C17. Courtyard and garden walls to rear of house in painted and red brick approx. 8 feet in height in 3 courts enclosing an area approx. 100 yards long by 60 yards. The house was originally built 1625 for the Milles family, reputedly by Inigo Jones. Remodelled early C19 and restored by Blomfield in 1910, the main range was destroyed by fire 1966.
