Two Iron Age coins found on Birdcage Marsh, in the Upchurch marshes:- (i) Bronze coin of Eppillus, Mack No 310, Evans' Type IV:5. (ii) Bronze coin, identified as Evans' Type N.11, but about which Allen shows considerable doubt, listing it either as Type LX 26 (North of Thames Group), or Type LY 6 or 8 (South of Thames Group-North Kentish Section). (1,2) Both these coins were found by Gray during the period 1948-52 in the Birdcage Marsh saltings, an area centred at TQ 849 700, now almost completely eroded away. The coins are in the BM (3) (a).
