Summary

Roman cremation burials were found in c.1889 by workmen digging for mud about 150 metres from the shore of the Medway on Stoke Marshes. The find included two urns containing burnt bones, four Samian paterae, a patera of black ware and a two-handled vase. Thought to respresent two interments. The present whereabouts of these finds is uncertain.

[TQ 8277 7337] Roman interments found. (1) A group of Roman pottery was found a few months ago by workmen digging for mud about 150 yds. from the shore of the Medway, N.E. of Lam-head Creek in the Stoke Marshes. It consisted of two urns containing burnt bones, four Samian paterae, a patera of black ware and a two-handled vase. These were stated to have come from one grave but there were evidently two interments. (2) Similar information. (3) Found at White's Works. (4-5) No further information could be obtained about this find. The findspot is upon mudflats covered by water at high tide. White's Works(Authy 4) was a cement and brick-making firm at Frindsbury, now taken over by another firm. The present location of the pottery has not been discovered (6). Additional references (7).
