Signs of Romano-British occupation around Chetney Island North of Chetney canal widespread indications of saltern debris and Romano-British pottery in the saltings (1). Surveys by the lower Medway Archaeological Research Group in c1963 showed an extensive Romano-British site with much briquetage in the saltings on the north side of Chetney Island, bisected by the 19th century Lazaret Canal (2) Romano-British salt panning site, (site shown at TQ 88067014 see Illustration Card for location map) (3).
