Summary

A 6th century globular urn with stamped decoration on shoulder and upper part of body, containing burnt bones, was found in October 1954 at a depth of circa 2 feet at the rear of No. 19 The Charne, Otford.

The site lies on a gentle north-east facing slope, on the west side of the Darent Valley, 300m from the present course of the river. OD 60-65m.

A 6th c. AS globular urn with stamped decoration on shoulder and upper part of body, containing burnt bones, was found in October 1954 at a depth of c.2 ft at the rear of No. 19 The Charne, Otford at TQ 52215897. It was restored by the finder, Mr Eagleton, and presented to Maidstone Museum (Acc. No. 98-1954). (1) Kent. Otford. Globular urn with wide mouth, flaring rim and rounded base: smoothed gritty dark-grey/brown ware. Decorated with a row of stamps demarcated above and below by three lines above three-line chevrons. The upper triangles contain a row of stamps at the top, and the lower contain a single stamp. Two stamps are used, one of which is probably the impression of a five-point comb. It is now in Maidstone Museum. (2) TQ 528594. Otford. Cremation burial. In 1954 an Anglo Saxon cremation burial with a stamp decorated pot of the VI was found on the Charre (sic) Estate. It is now in Maidstone Museum. (3)
