[TQ 86157200] Roman remains and urns. (1) Roman pottery was found during excavation of mud for cement-making from the Burnt Wick saltings at the head of the northern bend of Sharfleet Creek. (2) I have recently acquired a group of eleven vessels of Upchurch ware found in the Burnt Wick saltings. A 12th or 13th cent. jug was also found at Burnt Wick by men digging mud for cement-making. See AO/58/59/8. (3) [TQ 86147220] Roman Urns found [R] (4) There is a mass of oyster shells along the foreshore here, but no evidence of Roman occupation was seen. (5) Burntwick Saltings, possibly general area centred approximately TQ 86157221: Deposits comprising quantities of pottery including poppy-head beakers, flasks and local-type S-shaped bowls found during early 20th century mud-digging. Probable late 1st century or 2nd century pottery kiln site(s) in the vicinity, now destroyed by tidal erosion (6). Additional reference (7) and photograph of a medieval jug (8).
