Name:West Kingsdown Mill

Summary

West Kingsdown is a Grade II listed octagonal tarred weatherboarded smock mill. The mill was built in 1800. This mill originally stood at Chinham Farm, Farningham where the miller in the early 19th century was David Norton. It was moved in 1880 by his grandson, Tanner Norton, to its present site, where it stood beside a post mill which was burnt down in 1909. A stone in the foundations is marked "Minnie Louisa Norton, 21st April 1880". The mill last worked in 1928. It was acquired by Kent County Council in 1959. The mill is located within the farmyard of Mill House on the outskirts of West Kingsdown village. It is a significant village landmark and a prominent feature in the landscape, clearly visible from the M20 motorway.

WEST KINGSDOWN FELLS LANE 1. 5280 1.6.67 Kingsdown Windmill TQ 56 SE 6/240 II 2. Smock mill of Circa 1800. Octagonal weatherboarded structure on a rectangular base of red brick. Boat-shaped cap. Only the middlings of the sweeps remain. Fantail restored. This mill originally stood at Chinham Farm, Farningham where the miller in the early C19 was David Norton. It was moved in 1880 by his grandson, Tanner Norton, to its present site, where it stood beside a post mill which was burnt down in 1909. A stone in the foundations is marked "Minnie Louisa Norton, 21st April 1880". The mill last worked in 1928.

A smock mill of circa 1800. Consists of a weatherboarded structure on top of a red brick base. The mill originally stood at Chinham Farm, Farningham. The mill was moved to it's new site in 1880 to stand beside a post mill which burnt down in 1909. The mill ceased work in 1928, but is currently being restored. (2)
