[TQ 8829 6299] Four late 1st century A.D. Roman Bronze vessels, found in June 1962 by workmen laying drains at the Maypole Inn, Borden, are in Maidstone Museum: although no bones were found the deposit is thought to represent a burial (a)(b). The findspot, just off the S.W. corner of the lavatories, was pointed out by Mrs Jarrett, wife of the landlord. (1) Also found were a Samian cup of form 35 and part of a glass flagon. A trial trench, in 1962 by B. Philp and D. Kelly, revealed a ditch and a pit which contained sherds of native pottery. (2)
