The Customs House
GV II*
Guard house, now office. Early C19. Brick with slate hipped roof. Single-depth plan. Single-storey; 3-bay range to each side. Chamfered surrounds with rubbed brick flat arches to central doorway and recessed door, and 6/6-pane sashes. INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORY: attached to the wall to rear of former Commissioner's House (qv), and a pair with the matching guard house (qv) opposite. Occupies a very prominent position close to the ropery complex, and graded for its historical importance as an item within this notably complete Georgian dockyard and factory.
