Summary

A hoard of about 5470 Roman antoninian dating from 218 to 282 AD were discovered buried in an urn in field No. 70, Old Mill Farm, Hollingbourne in 1959. The coins are in the British Museum, and the urn is on loan to the Maidstone Museum. The urn is a native type, hand made in grey-buff ware, and coated with haematite in an early Iron Age `A' tradition. Maidstone Museum has acquired a representative sample of 40 coins from the hoard ranging from Gordian III to Probus (AD 238-282) and all the 376 barbarious imitations (Acc. No. 23.1961) A late 3rd century hoard.

Centred [TQ 8235 5424] A hoard of about 5470 Roman antoninian dating from 218 to 282 AD were discovered buried in an urn in field No. 70, Old Mill Farm, Hollingbourne in 1959. The coins are in the British Museum, and the urn is on loan to the Maidstone Museum. The urn is a native type, hand made in grey-buff ware, and coated with haematite in an early Iron Age `A' tradition. No. 23. 1961) (2) TQ 8218 5430 The exact findspot was indicated by Mr. W. Reddish, of Old Mill Farm. He said the hoard was uncovered by the plough in July 1959.
