A bronze vase dating to the Roman period was found in 1820 on Heronden estate, near the site of the old mill at Ashbourne. The vase has been tentatively dated to the late 1st century.

"On Heronden estate, near site of old mill at Ashbourne, a bronze vase of Roman workmanship found by Mr. Crouchton (a) c. 1820. Late 1st c., now in possession of Miss Peel, Heronden Hall (1936) (1-2) Miss Peel is dead and Heronden Hall has for several years been in the ownership of an American, Mr. de Kraft, who winters in America, and could not be contacted. (3)
