[TQ 71647411] A Roman interment was found during the laying of a water main at Church Street, Higham, at a spot c.100 yds. S. of Higham Church and 10 yds. along the short modern road to the Sun Inn from the ancient way which leads to the causeway to the Thames. The workmen cut across a skeleton and found two small vases and a patera on its right side. I cleared out the remaining portion of the grave; in it lay the upper half of the skeleton with an iron coffin nail on each side of the skull (1). A skeleton with two small vases and an Upchurch dish found 107 yds. [presumably a mistake in the copying of the 10 yds of auth (1)] west of the road leading to the causeway (2). The present location of finds from this site was not ascertained. The bulk of the George Payne collection went to the British Museum, a small selection being held by Rochester Museum (3).
