[TQ 760 709] Middleton's Battery, 17th cent to house 10 guns. (1) In June 1667 after the Dutch had delivered a crippling blow on the English fleet in the Medway, the Duke of Albemarle was sent to take charge of the English forces. When the Dutch had retired for a short period, Albemarle set up an eight gun battery outside Upnor Castle, which became known as Middleton's Battery. On the 13th June the Dutch resumed their attack with a bombardment of Upnor Castle, from which they received a hot reply, and found that they could no longer advance further up the Medway (2). Battery indicated on early chart (3). Unable to gain access in 2004 as area is in use as a military site. (4)
