Description from record TQ 67 SW 25:
[TQ 61377116] St. Nicholas's Church [NAT] (1) St. Nicholas's Church, Southfleet; mainly 14th. century; stands on the site of a Saxon church, which itself replaced a Roman temple, the only remains of which are two small red tiles to the right of the porch. [No other evidence found to support the statement regarding the Saxon church and the Roman temple site.] (2) St. Nicholas' Church consists of Nave, with north and south aisles, chancel, west tower, south porch and north vestry. There is nothing in the fabric or plan to suggest a Roman or Saxon site or origin. Not even the tiles mentioned by Authy.2 are to be seen. Still in use for public worship. (3) No change. (4) Church of St Nicholas,Church Street. Grade I. C14 with some C15 windows, restored in 1867. Built of flint with west tower of 3 stages built of flint and ragstone in a chequerwork pattern with higher north-east octagonal stair turret and crenellated parapet. Chance, nave and aisle with 3 gables of equal size. South porch. Decorated interior. Piscina and triple sedillia with ogee arches. South aisle has some fragments of sculpture. Perpendicular font. Stalls with misericords. Some C14 tiles near the sedilia. Pulpit made up of Jacobean panels. Wall paintings of Latimer and Ridley, possibly C18. Several brasses in chancel and south aisle, and large alabaster wall monument to John Sedley died 1605. (5) Additional Bibliography (6)
