Summary

Site of a suspected Roman salt workings. Reddish alluvial soil with bricky crumbs and occasional sherds of coarse black pottery have been observed on the parish boundary. An area of salt panning overlying the chalk has also been observed below this.

[TQ 7514 7641] Cooling. Roman (?) saltworkings. From 25m east of this point on the parish boundary the alluvial soil becomes reddish, with bricky crumbs and occasional sherds of coarse black pottery, continuing for about 100m eastward and covering an area of salt panning overlying the chalk, which is here about 2m below the surface (1).
